Beautiful nails are a girl’s best accessory, but removing them the wrong way can leave your natural nails thin, weak, and damaged. So many women make the mistake of peeling or forcing gel off, which strips away layers of the natural nail underneath.
Taking your time and doing it correctly saves your nails from breakage and keeps them healthy and strong. The safe removal of hard builder gel at home is completely possible with the right steps.
Gather your supplies before you begin:
Before anything else, get everything ready in one place. You will need a nail file, a buffer, aluminum foil, cotton pads, acetone, cuticle oil, and a wooden stick. Having all your tools within reach makes the whole process smooth and stress free. Skipping any of these items can slow you down and cause unnecessary damage to your nails.
File off the top layer first:
Start by using a coarse nail file to gently remove the shiny top coat from each nail. This step breaks the seal and allows the acetone to soak into the gel layers properly. Do not press too hard while filing. Light, even strokes across the surface are all you need. Stop filing once the shine is fully gone from every nail.
Soak cotton pads in acetone:
Cut your cotton pads into small pieces that fit over each nail. Soak each piece well in acetone, then place it directly on top of the nail. Wrap each finger tightly with a small piece of aluminum foil to hold the cotton pad in place. This keeps the acetone in contact with the gel and speeds up the soaking process nicely.
Wait and let the acetone do its work:
This is the part where patience pays off. Keep the foil wraps on for at least 20 to 25 minutes. Avoid the urge to peek too early. The gel needs enough time to soften and loosen from the nail surface. Rushing this step leads to forceful scraping, which is what causes the most damage to natural nails.
Gently push off the softened gel:
After the waiting time is over, remove one foil wrap at a time. Use a wooden stick to gently push the softened gel off the nail in small, easy movements. If it feels resistant, wrap it back up for a few more minutes. Never force or scrape hard. The gel should slide off with very little effort at all.
